The Golden Toad was launched in March of 2004 at the National Fiery Foods & BBQ Show in Albuquerque, NM with three products and a dream. Our first three products were our Chipotle Pepper Sauce, Chipotle BBQ Finishing Sauce, and Prime Steak Rub. A couple years later in 2006 my wife, Sara, and I were convinced to vend at the 13th Annual Frisco Colorado BBQ Challenge. We were told that it would be a great place to sell our products. Little did we know how this first BBQ event would change our lives. Although we didn’t start competing as a Competitive BBQ Team until 2010, the Frisco Colorado event is where our competition BBQ adventure began.
The dream actually began on the beaches of San Diego in the early 1990’s where I spent my time bartending and managing restaurants while attending San Diego State University. At one particular restaurant in La Jolla, I began experimenting with a few recipes. On Wednesday nights the restaurant ran a Lobster Taco special and I started offering a Chipotle Pepper Sauce to the locals. The Locals started to ask if they could purchase the sauce, and the idea was born.
The name was next. My father, who is also a current member of the BBQ Team, gave me the nickname Toad. Many of my friends knew of this nickname and one of my college friends told me about an extinct amphibian that was once endemic to the Monte Verde Cloud Forest in Costa Rica, the Golden Toad. The name fit. Probably because I always believed that a company should give a little back and I wanted to make sure that my company gave to worthy causes. I eventually registered our trademarked tag line "Saving the Planet One Tongue at a Time®" and the Golden Toad currently donates a portion of its proceeds to the Children’s Hospital, the Colorado Wildlife Heritage Foundation, the Denver Zoo, and several military charities.
The product line and business continued to grow year after year, and with the help of one of our signature menu items, the "Shrimp Bomb", the Golden Toad quickly became a favorite vendor at many of the local events in Colorado. In 2010 at the Colorado BBQ Challenge in Frisco, I decided to join KCBS (Kansas City Barbeque Society) and RMBBQA (Rocky Mountain BBQ Association) and start competing. Since that first competition, the team has been rewarded with consistent calls to stage and multiple People’s Choice awards. The Golden Toad Competition BBQ Team won its first Grand Championship in May of 2012 at the Sam’s Club National BBQ Tour in Thornton, Colorado. We Plan to continue to BBQ competitively around Colorado and we plan to add more competitions throughout the country in the coming years.
Although the BBQ Competitions are a ton of fun. Our products are what started it all. And we take pride in producing hand crafted, single batch, sauces and seasonings. We use only the freshest ingredients, and we believe that you will notice the difference.
